IT Role Profile: Machine Learning Engineer

Our last couple of IT role profiles have referenced TechRepublic’s IT hottest jobs of 2017, and this month we’re featuring another great position from that list. The Machine Learning Engineer ranked #10, but we could see greater popularity with this role in the future as machine learning and artificial intelligence become more mainstream.

What is a Machine Learning Engineer?

Udacity states that, “Machine learning represents a key evolution in the field of computer science, data analysis, software engineering, and artificial intelligence.” These engineers build the machine learning product and maintain the system for optimal performance. Machine learning engineers are slowly growing in demand, and this role will become more important to organizations as they adopt artificial intelligence and/or machine learning systems.

Glassdoor currently reports a national salary average of $114,826 for machine learning engineers, but you could earn more, depending on the company size, geographic location, etc.

How can I be a successful in this role?

Given that machine learning is quickly advancing in technology, companies are searching for the best talent available. However, there isn’t a large selection of candidates because machine learning is still on the rise. This means that any candidates currently looking for a machine learning engineer role should demonstrate how they’re qualified and highlight the appropriate skills needed to get the job done right.

Dice suggests that candidates should emphasize a willingness to learn about machine learning as the position will teach a lot about artificial intelligence and machine learning. Critical thinking and problem solving are other strong skills that candidates need as building these types of products requires the ability to think on a deeper level. Candidates should also have programming skills and experience with Python, C++, Java, R, and other well-known programming languages.

What is the outlook for this position?

Machine learning and artificial intelligence are hot, growing tech topics and have a promising outlook. More and more organizations are searching for new ways to innovate, and they’re often turning to these areas for such changes, which increases a company’s need for this technical support leading them to hire more Machine Learning Engineers.

Overall, this role is becoming more popular and companies will need these engineers to perfect the technologies and help the organization innovate. Machine Learning Engineers are at the start of a very exciting future, and it could be soon when we notice this position rank higher on the top IT jobs lists.
