Common Mistakes by IT Consultants and How to Avoid Them

June 26, 2012

Let’s face it—mistakes happen. Even well-trained IT pros can make some major blunders. Whether it is issues with choosing the right BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy or leaving holes in your network security, there are a growing number of errors to make.

The staff at Infoworld.com recently made a list of the 20 IT gotchas and how you can avoid them. They identified common mistakes like forgetting about the human element of IT security:

“Today’s network admins have access to a dizzying array of security tools. But as hacker Kevin Mitnick is fond of saying, the weakest link in any network is its people… Make users aware of potential social engineering attacks, the risks involved, and how to respond. Furthermore, encourage them to report suspected violations immediately. In this era of phishing and identity theft, security is a responsibility that every employee must share.”

Here is a sample of their top five IT Blunders:

  1. Botching your outsourcing strategy
  2. Ignoring the human element of security
  3. Missing the mark on open source
  4. Taking a half-baked approach to BYOD
  5. Promoting the wrong people

What blunders have you seen in the past? How did you or your company learn from it? Let us know in the comments below!
