January 24, 2017

Professional certifications can be very valuable to your career, especially for those in IT. Employers tend to hire professionals who have a certification related to the job as it reinforces their skillset listed on their resumes. Certifications can also give you confidence in your work and can be a springboard to reaching higher-level positions in your career.

How can you be sure which certifications are worth the investment? There are many factors to consider when deciding which certification to pursue, but a good place to start is determining which IT certifications are relevant in today’s workplace. Security and project management are just a couple of areas in which organizations often focus their hiring efforts, so here a few certifications that might stand out on your resume.

Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)

The CISSP certification is globally recognized, and it reflects the knowledge needed to work in information security positions ranging from Analyst/Engineer to Director or even CISO. This certification isn’t vendor-specific, which means you can apply technical competencies across various systems in different organizations.

Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)

CISM certifications are focused on information security management and distinguishes your ability to manage and oversee an organization’s IT security department. Professionals who have this certification can really excel in their careers as many employers pursue those with it.

Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC)

Professionals who hold the CRISC certification understand risk management and how it relates back to the business. Business Analysts, Risk Compliance, and Project Managers will benefit from obtaining this certification as some of their responsibilities encounter risk management.

Project Management Professional (PMP)

Project managers will always be in demand as IT departments work to enhance their systems, networks, and complete other projects for the business. These roles can be essential for an IT team and project managers should have their PMP certification.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional

The AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional certification reflects the understanding that networking professionals need when designing and arranging AWS cloud systems. It’s recommended that you have at least a few years of experience, as well as having the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate certification, before you pursue the Professional-level certification.

What certifications would you add to this list?
