Some description

Culture is one of the most important features that we take pride in at York. Having a “culture captain” who passionately advocates our core values and drives innovative programs to strengthen employee growth and the dynamic office environment come far and few to find. This month, meet our “culture captain” Jen Skinner, Senior Director of Human Resources and find out the advice she would to others in the early stages of their career.

Can you tell us a little bit about your role?

I’m the Senior Director of Human Resources at York. My central goal in Human Resources is protect and cultivate the company culture by creating an environment where all team members can achieve their highest potential given their unique talents.

Where did you go to school?

I received my BS in Finance from Miami University (Ohio) and my MBA in HR Management from DePaul University.

What drew you to York Solutions?

For a mom re-entering the workforce after 6 years away from the professional world, the work-life balance that York offers was critical in allowing me to restart my career. Since being here, the core values of the company are my motivators. Not every company has core values as a backbone. And I love being part of a progressive organization focused on doing good by its people. From an HR person’s perspective, it’s the best case scenario.

What has been your biggest accomplishment since working here?

From a technical standpoint, my biggest accomplishment has been the inception of the L.E.A.D. program. The L.E.A.D. program is in its infancy and will hopefully grow into a robust platform of programs and benefits that align with individual and company goals. From a personal perspective, I feel like I’ve been successful in building relationships with the York team and being there as a resource and touchpoint to help people when they need it.

Why do you like coming to work every day?

I love the people of York. Everyone at York has good intentions, good hearts, and are focused on the overall team effort. Everyone has the opportunity to create their own path and develop their talents to contribute to the success of the company. And being part of a growing company is exciting.

Who has influenced you the most, either professionally or personally?

My grandfather continues to be influential in how I approach my HR role. He was a banker and would always go above and beyond to help those who needed it. His concern for people who had fallen on hard times and understanding people as individuals continues to be inspirational in focusing me on serving the needs of our team.

How do you spend your time outside of the office?

When not at York, I’m an expert carpooler and lunch packer. But most of my time is spent simply hanging with my husband and kids. I love to play tennis, digging in my garden, and exercising to keep my mind clear. If the sun is shining, you’ll most likely find me outdoors.

Do you have a hidden talent or something interesting that most people do not know about you?

I love presidential history, am a politics and sports junkie, and my dream is to live on a farm surrounded by a ton of animals and open space.

What is your favorite quote or what motivates you?

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work”.  – Thomas Edison

Do you have any book suggestions/professional development/any professional advice you would tell yourself 5 years ago?

My all-time favorite book is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The simple story of pursuing dreams, understanding your heart, and the gift of the journey is profoundly inspiring. Every time I read it, I take away something new. Advice I would give to myself and any others in the early stages in their careers is to believe in the idea of when one door closes, another opens. Everything happens for a reason so enjoy the present – you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
