B2E Participant Profile: Andrea Lentz

York’s Barriers to Entry (B2E) program is designed to help individuals re-enter the workforce by providing training in project management and business skills. As we just passed the program’s one year anniversary, we are proud to introduce you to participant Andrea Lentz to learn more about her journey with the B2E program.

What were you doing before B2E?

Prior to B2E, I was leading a philanthropic program that provided free school uniforms to approximately 5,000 low-income Minneapolis/St. Paul elementary students. I managed over 200 volunteers from procurement of clothing to final distribution of uniforms to students, worked with 8 school administrations, redesigned storage warehousing, and led a 15% expansion of students receiving clothing.

What about the B2E program made you interested in applying?

  • My interest in IT Project Management
  • The recognition of my transferrable skills
  • The impressive leadership of the program and the values of York Solutions
  • The 3-week training program prior to being placed at a client
  • The mentorship and continued support of my professional development for a year as I re-entered the workforce
  • The impressive list of participating IT professionals and companies participating in the program
  • The networking opportunities
  • The support of the companies hiring B2E participants

What have you been doing in your role at the client?

I have been responsible for project coordination and management within the IT PMO, providing support to company project capacity planning and forecasting, developing standard operating procedures for the intake of IT Maintenance projects, and I am an active participant of the IT PMO Artifact Quality Review development team.

How, if at all, has your previous experience helped you in this role?

I am transferring many skills I have into the PMO, including my experience leading teams with various backgrounds, my ability to communicate, my prior IT background and strategic planning knowledge, my ability to manage programs, and my experience diving in and getting work done.

What impact has B2E had on your life?

B2E has provided me the path to re-enter the workforce, showcase what I can bring to an organization, and allowed me to grow professionally in a challenging, yet supportive, environment. The program has given me confidence in my abilities and given me an opportunity to move forward in my life.

What do you envision for your professional future/career path?

I envision continuing to grow within an IT PMO, taking on more responsibilities, and managing more complex projects. My goal is to be a vital and respected resource and a valued contributor for the organization I work for as I continue to challenge myself professionally.
